The inaugural Broadway Climate Summit will take place on Sept. 22. Co-founded by Climate Imaginarium, Earth Era Studios, OneUpAction International and 6th Fest, the summit will be part of the roster of events for Climate Week NYC, the largest climate symposium in the world. Broadway Climate Summit will take place at Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York and Ripley-Grier Studios in Manhattan between 10:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
Broadway Climate Summit’s mission is to “bring together theater professionals and climate advocates to reimagine an industry that prioritizes climate storytelling, sustainability and theater as a cultural movement for our planet.”
Programming for the event comprises panels and workshops. Panelists will include Broadway Green Alliance’s (BGA) director Molly Braverman, Public Theater’s director of civic artistic programs Pablo Hernandez Basulto, Lincoln Center Theater’s artistic associate Kaaron Briscoe, Tony Award-nominated producer Alex Robertson, the Eagle Project founder Opalanietet Pierce, OnceUpAction International founder Kevin J. Patel, Sandra Goldmark and Edward T. Morris, as well as representatives from Lubdub Theatre Co. and Hudson Valley Shakespeare. There will be a workshop examining “Compelling Climate Narrative.” Scheduled performances will include excerpts from Will Arbery’s “Evanston Salts Costs Climbing,” Amy Berryman’s “Walden” and Joe Murphy and Joe Roberston’s “Kyoto,” the latter of which will bow Off-Broadway at LCT in October. The day will culminate with an evening performance featuring Tony Award-nominated actor Katy Sullivan.
Broadway Climate Summit’s steering committee and partners include Tony-nominated playwright Stephen Adly Gurigis as well asBill McKibben, Yellow Dot Studio and the New Group.

In addition to the Broadway Climate Summit, BGA will participate in other NYC Climate Week events.
On Sept. 22 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at WNYC-NPR Studios’ Greene Space, BGA will co-present “The Performing Arts Lights the Way: A Climate Week Celebration.” Hosted by Food Tank, the McKnight Foundation and the BGA, this immersive event will include chef demonstrations, tastings and performances.
On Sept. 25, BGA’s program manager Austin Braxton-Smith will speak about BGA’s College Green Captain program on a panel as part of “Jumping into a Green New School Year: Student Voices for Climate Action.” Hosted by Project Green Schools, this virtual event will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Finally, BGA will co-host (along with Food Tank, Niman Ranch and Now Partners) “A Night Honoring Our Farmers — Food and Agriculture Storytelling” on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at WNYC-NPR Studios’ Greene Space. This evening will feature ten farmers who will share personal stories in a spoken word format. BGA board members David Alpert and Tony nominee Anika Larsen will direct and coach the farmers.
